The city of Springfield is rich in the tradition of amateur softball
competition. For more than 75 years the pastime has been a mainstay of
warm summer nights here. But the history of the sport on the local scene
for the most part has been based in memories of those that played and
coached the game. There really was no central place or base that could
be appropriately tagged as the "home" of softball in town. On April 15,
1999, "The Softball Museum of Springfield" was officially opened at the
Roger G. Killian Sports Complex, marking the first true location for
softball history in the city. This museum was a joint venture with the
Springfield-Greene County Park Board, Springfield Amateur Softball
Association and the Missouri Amateur Softball Association.
